Mit Jack Nicholson am Drehbuch und Peter Fonda & Dennis Hopper vor der Kamera, scheint Roger Cormans Versuch der Visualisierung eines LSD-Trips zusammen mit THE WILD ANGELS der Wegbereiter für Hoppers EASY RIDER zu sein. Der Legende nach hat Nicholson den Stoff während eines einzigen Trips geschrieben. Sounds legit! Im Double Feature mit THE WILD ANGELS.
Paul Groves (Peter Fonda) ist ein Regisseur in Scheidungs- und Sinnkrise. Da kommt ihm das Versprechen der gehypten Bewusstseinserweiterung durch LSD gerade recht. Zunächst noch im Beisein des bemühten Tripsitters John (Bruce Dern), doch schon bald all over the place, wenn er ausbricht und allein durch Los Angeles irrt…
Wie schon bei THE WILD ANGELS nahm Corman den Recherche-Prozess bei THE TRIP sehr ernst. Soll meinen, er wollte wissen, wovon er erzählt: „I approached acid much the way I approached Freud and analysis. I did research. I read Timothy Leary, who believed you should trip with somebody you knew and be in a beautiful place. I got together a group of friends and decided to take my trip up north around Big Sur […] I spent the next seven hours face down in the ground, beneath a tree, not moving, absorbed in the most wonderful trip imagineable“ erinnert sich Corman in seiner Autobiographie.
Ob eine adäquate Inszenierung eines LSD-Trips gelungen ist oder nicht, sei dahingestellt. Definitiv stellt THE TRIP aber ein immens aufwendiges und filmisch eskalierendes Ausnahmewerk dar, das im letzten Drittel in einem überfordernden Schnitt-Gewitter gipfelt. Cinema hypnosis, ganz nüchtern wird hier niemand raustorkeln!
